Abbeville is a taste of yesteryear with it's cobblestone main
square and historic architecture is like a travel in time back
to the old south. The courthouse on the square once belonged to
Revolutionary war leader Andrew Pickens.It also was the site that
John C. Calhoun launched his political career. If you love history
and or have a fascination with ghosts you will enjoy the annual
"Ghost Walk"
Abbeville is said to have numerous tales of old
homes and buildings
inhabited by what they say can only be
ghosts of the past.

Many "road companies" toured from New
York to Atlanta, with the
Opera House as
an overnight stop. Between 1908 and 1913,
Abbevillians enjoyed approximately 260 live
performances on the magnificent Opera
House Stage today the
Opera House is fully
restored to its turn-of-the-century condition
with two exceptions - the addition of air
conditioning and rocking chair seats. Listed
on the
National Register of Historic
Places
, the theater uses the same rope
pulled rigging systems as in 1908, and is the
only "Hemphouse" remaining in
South
Carolina.

The Old Trinity
Church, built in 1860 and noted
for its Gothic Revival architecture.
When you walk through the doors
of this historic landmark you are
taken back in time and can almost
see the men,women and children of
the past as they might have been
seated in the old pews. Beautiful
stained glass windows absolutely
take your breath away.

The area has seen an influx of
retirees
moving to Abbeville to
enjoy the quite peacefulness of the
small town,with the convenience of
the cosmopolitan cities nearby.80
Mennonite families have recently
moved into the area finding that the
rural atmosphere meets their cultural
needs. The sleepy little town is waking
up and welcoming new business,
industry, visitors, and residents.
